The Glacier Melt Crescent Shaped Cabled Shawlette was inspired by a recent visit to Glacier Bay in Alaska. It was easy to be in awe of the mammoth glaciers towering above the clear, pristine water. It was a sunny day, and the glaciers reflected a radiant shade of cyan blue suspended in ice. Every so often, huge cracking and crashing sounds interrupted the silence as pieces of the glacier melted and fell into the bay. This process is called glacial “calving” and there has been a definite increase in it due to global warming. The color of the Lorna’s Lace yarn that I chose to knit this in reminded me of the glacier blue. I knit this shawlette in 2 skeins (270 yards per skein) of their Sportmate yarn in the shade of “The Outer Drive” which is a luxurious light DK weight yarn comprised of a blend of Superwash Merino Wool and Viscose, but any DK weight yarn would probably work well. It is knit from the bottom up, starting with a cable pattern that represents glacial melting, and then moving upwards to a short row garter stitch body section that gives the shawlette its wearable crescent shape. It is an easy pattern to work with simple written cabling pattern instructions, so no chart is included. About 6 feet in length, it is also approximately a foot wide at its center, widest point. It is machine washable (delicate cycle, separately, re-pin to shape flat to dry).
