Glaciers Mittens
First, there were the Glaciers socks. And now, there are the Glaciers mittens! Ever wanted your socks to match your mittens? No? Me neither! But now, you can. Like the Glaciers socks, the Glaciers mittens mimic the glaciers of the Rocky Mountains, beginning with a ice capped cuff and running down the hand into the waters at the fingertips.
Sizes
There are three sizes in the pattern: 1 (18.5cm hand circumference), 2 (21.5cm hand circumference); and 3 (22.5cm hand circumference). Work the size closest to your measurement. Find your size by measuring the circumference of your hand below your fingers (not including your thumb). If between sizes, size up.
Yarn and Yardage
Three colours are needed for these mittens, ranging from light to dark. To achieve the effect in the picture, the second colour should be variegated with a colour in common for both the first colour (cuff) and the third colour (fingertips). Fade sets will also work well for this pattern. C1 needs 50 - 75 yards, C2 55 - 85 yards, and C3 45 - 90 yards. Yardage for C3 will vary depending on mitten length.
Notions
Knitting needles (DPNs or circulars), darning needle, stitch markers, scrap yarn in a contrasting colour.
Techniques
The Glaciers mittens are knit from the cuff to the fingertips. The thumb stitches are put on hold while working the palm, and are then used after to knit the thumb. Basic colourwork skills including minimal stranded knitting and carrying yarn up the side for four rounds is needed.
