Knit in sock yarn for robust wear and easy washing, these fingerless mitts feature a cabled cuff that is worked sideways and then grafted together. Ribbed wrist bands keep the cold out and i-cord details provide beautiful and robust hems. Four sizes are provided.
Named after the farming community of Glenkenich in Otago, Aotearoa NZ.

Materials

  • 1 skein of Vintage Purls Tramp Biodegradable Sock yarn (75% Superwash Merino Wool, 25% Biodegradable Nylon; 420 metres / 416 yards per 100g skein).
  • 2.25mm needle or size that gives you gauge, choose whatever needles you prefer to knit a small circumference in the round (magic loop, double point needles, etc.)
  • 2 stitch markers (you may like to have a third if you wish to mark your beginning of round instead of relying on your needle setup to make that clear).
  • A small amount of scrap yarn for provisional cast ons and placing stitches on hold.
  • A small cable needle or round-profile toothpick.

Gauge

36 stitches and 48 rows in 10cm (4”) in stocking stitch.
Stitch gauge is essential, row gauge is less important so don’t fret if that is a stitch or two off.

Size

Instructions are included for four sizes: x-small, small, medium and large.

  • X-small measures 15cm/6” around at the palm.
  • Small measures 18cm/7” around at the palm.
  • Medium measures 20cm/8” around at the palm.
  • Large measures 23cm/9” around at the palm. The length of the hand and thumb are adjustable, you will work to your unique requirements.

Modifications

This pattern can be knit without the cabled portion of the cuff for a much plainer mitt. Instructions are included for this modification.
