Glerbrot is worked in repeats of 32 plus 9 stitches and includes six different pattern stripes that you can combine any way you want. The pattern can be worked both flat and in the round, so you can really use this to make all kinds of projects in any size you like. For example, cushions, rugs, purses and blankets.
Included in the pattern are separate files for 3 different colorways for the medium size Glerbrot blanket in the wonderful DK weight Saga Wool from Icewear Garn.
This is an ALL CHARTS PATTERN and comes with user-friendly charts for all the tile versions.
If you are new to Mosaic Crochet, I have lots of tutorials available for that over on my YouTube channel. For the basic mosaic crochet technique, how to read my charts, how to work in the round as well as the extra tapestry and intarsia color techniques used in this colourful version of the Glerbrot blanket. It’s easy peasy, I promise! Just hop over to my YouTube channel and we’ll do this together!

Yarn:
You can use any yarn you like for this pattern and a hook that suits your yarn.
I made the original Glerbrot blanket using the wonderful SAGA WOOL from Icewear Garn. This yarn is a DK weight, 100% wool that comes in 50 g = 100 m skeins.
For the medium sized Glerbrot blanket shown here, you will need:
17 skeins of each color for a 2 colored version.
That’s 15 skeins of the main color A for the body of the blanket, plus 2 skeins for the border.
For pattern color B you will need 12 skeins for the body of the blanket, plus 5 for the border.
If you want to make a color splash version, you will need 2 skeins each for the colored diamond stripes. Here I used rustic pink for the background and blue for the diamonds. Plus 1 skein each of 3 more accent colors. Here I used green, yellow and brown.
See special file included in the pattern for the exact colors I used for the original colorway. You could also use scraps in the same weight of yarn for these accent color splashes.
Hooks:
If using the recommend yarn here, you will need a 4 mm hook for the body of the blanket and a 3.5 mm hook for the border.
Gauge:
Approx. 20 ST & 20 rows = 10 cm (4 inches)
Using recommended yarn and a 4 mm hook in a basic mosaic stitch.
Abbreviations (US terms):
ST = stitch/stitches
SS = slip stitch
CH = chain stitch
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
FPDC = front post double crochet
My original Glerbrot piece is a medium sized blanket, approximately 1 m wide and 140 cm long. Yarn stats here are according to that and the Saga Wool Icewear DK yarn I used. You can of course make any size of blanket with various types of yarn weight. See my blanket size guide on included in the pattern for small, medium and large sized Glergrot blanket in DK weight.
Colors and extra techniques
You will need at least two colors and I recommend using contrasting colors. Color A is the main color and color B is the pattern color that makes up the outlines of the diamonds. I used the intarsia method to add some color splashes in the main color too, to get different colored “filling” for random diamonds. The pattern itself is a basic 2 colored mosaic design, and these color splashes inside the diamonds is optional.
For the diamond stripes with different background color I used tapestry technique mixed with mosaic crochet. This pattern does not come with special instructions on how to work these extra techniques, but I have a video tutorial for the tapestry technique already available on my YouTube channel (I show this at the end of the Viking Knot video) and have a new video on the intarsia method mixed with mosaic crochet coming there soon to. So, you can find visual aide for both techniques on my YouTube channel, it really is just way easier to show in a video.
