About This Design
I freely confess that I have a fondness for multi-dye yarns. The intricate bursts of colour add an element of intrigue, but at times, it can be challenging to select a stitch pattern that isn’t overshadowed by the vibrant hues. While the reliable stockinette stitch is a go-to choice, the colours can sometimes cluster together, creating a noticeable pooling effect on the front side. Conversely, on the reverse side of the stockinette stitch, the pooling appears less pronounced, which is quite appealing!

I was inspired to create these unique socks by the challenge of showcasing the beautiful characteristics of the yarn I had chosen. To achieve this, I incorporated a design featuring a wide zig-zag pattern created by 1x1 crossed stitches against a background of reverse stockinette stitch. The zigzag slowly travels up the sock, adding an element of rhythm to the overall look. To make things even more appealing, I decided to work the zigzag in a mirror orientation on the second sock, creating a visually dynamic and engaging pair of socks.

Like most of my sock patterns, this one is toe-up with a German short-row heel turn and a nice deep gusset and heel flap.

Size
To fit foot circumference:

  • Small 18 cm/7 ins
  • Medium 20 cm/8 ins
  • Large 23 cm/9 ins
  • Extra Large 25.5 cm/10 ins

Please note that the completed dimensions for the foot circumference will be smaller than the actual foot circumference. This is because the pattern includes negative ease to ensure a snug fit. Please select your size based on your actual foot circumference measurement. Instructions are given for the smallest size, with the other sizes shown in brackets.

Gauge
32 stitches x 48 rows over 10 cm (4 in) in stocking (stockinette) stitch, knitted in the round using 2.25 mm (US size 1.0, UK size 13) needles. A good match for tension (especially stitch gauge) is essential for this pattern to ensure a good fit. Please move up or down a needle size and swatch one more time if your gauge does not match.

Yarn
Approximately 384 m/420 yds of 4 ply/fingering weight sock yarn that knits to match the required tension gauge. This is equivalent to approximately 100 g of yarn (2x 50 g balls), with the label specifying 192 m/210 yds per 50g.

The sample Go Your Own Way socks have been knitted with Skeinz Sole Yarn in the Robin’s Nest shade.

Needles
A pair of 2.25 mm (US size 1, UK size 13) 61 cm/24 in circular needles. Optional 2.5 mm (US size 1.5, UK size 12) circular needles for the cuff.

Notions
Cable needle, if you choose to use one.
Tapestry/darning needle.
Blocking materials (optional).
