Golden Gate Park Shawl has a different construction. A panel of lace and bobbles is worked for the center of the shawl. Stitches are then picked up and knit along the right and left edges of this panel to work the wings of the shawl. The wings are worked out from the center panel and give the shawl its width. This shawl is a wonderful accessory to drape over your shoulders in warm weather. When it’s cold, double wrap the shawl, and you’ll be toasty and warm.
I had the honor of designing this shawl with Sincere Sheep’s Cormo Fingering, a fabulous 100% Cormo wool. Brooke is a natural dyer and sources products from producers and companies who follow high standards and work in a sustainable way to support the local economy. All Sincere Sheep yarn and fiber are dyed using color extracted from plants and periodically from insects. Brooke’s color palette is amazing, and I have been looking forward to an opportunity to collaborate with her.
I grew up in San Francisco and learned to ride a bike in Golden Gate Park (the center panel). The main drive in the park is John F. Kennedy Drive. We would go bike riding with my cousins on Sundays when they closed it to car traffic. The Richmond district is on the north side of the park, and the Sunset district is to the south (the wings). I didn’t realize I could balance on my bike until my dad took the training wheels off one day and just told me to GO. Those were the best days with my sisters and cousins – being able to ride for what I thought were miles and miles was such a glorious feeling!
Swatch yarn and extra yarn are included in the yarn requirement. Gauge is not critical for this pattern, however, a different gauge will affect the size of your shawl and the amount of yarn used.
The lace and bobble center panel have both chart and written directions. The wings of the shawl have written directions only.
See bottom photo for shawl schematic.
Thank you to Brooke and Sincere Sheep for yarn support!
