The inspiration for this pattern came from the Ravelry Designers’ Challenge Group’s 2013 February challenge. There was a video posted in the challenge about Fibonacci numbers and the golden mean. It made me think, draw and knit, rethink and finally design this pattern. Since the video also dealt with how these numbers can be found in the nature, in the way plants grow their leaves for example, I chose to use plant fibres for the project.
On the front side of the mittens there is the golden mean and on the palm side, (almost all) the numbers of the rows are Fibonacci numbers.
Since the number of stitches is “mathematically” determined, sizing is possible by using different weight yarn and/or needles.
Thi is a small project, it does not require a whole skein of yarn.
Additional materials:

  • cotton embroidery thread (black and variegated yellow)
  • sewing thread
  • tapestry needle
  • 1.5 mm crochet hook

This is my first design written up as a pdf, still I hope it is understandable. Feedback on the pattern is welcome!
