Golden Oldie Blanket
Inspired by a baby blanket knitted by my Dutch-American grandmother in the 1950s, this blanket throw features an easy and elegant pattern of Garter Stitch and Fisherman’s Rib Stitch that is stretchy, warm and soft. Pieces are joined with a decorative Flat Crochet Braid.
SIZE
One size. Finished size of blanket 120 x 135 cm, 48 x 54 inches - comprising six pieces each blocked to about 40 x 55 cm (16 x 22 inches).
YARN
Shown in worsted weight, Berroco Comfort, 50% Nylon, 50% Acrylic
193 m, 210 yds; 100 g, 3.5 oz.
9 balls
Color: Goldenrod
Or worsted weight yarn (US medium 4) selected for stitch definition and easy care
NEEDLES
6 mm (US 10) one pin for cast on;
5 mm (US 8) 60 cm, 24 inch circular needles for flat knitting
NOTIONS
Removable markers; tapestry needle sharp pointed; tapestry needle blunt pointed; crochet hook 5 mm (US H); scissors; row counter
GAUGE - APPROX 10 cm, 4 inches square
17 stitches and 17 ridges (34 rows) in Garter Stitch after blocking
13 stitches and 17 big loops (34 rows) in Fisherman’s Rib after blocking
Note: This blanket is best knit to your own consistent tension. The beauty of the pattern is that the Fisherman’s Rib Stitch is a much looser gauge than the Garter Stitch.
NOTES
Each of the six large blanket pieces has a Garter Stitch border - and a patchwork effect of alternating Garter Stitch and Fisherman’s Rib Stitch. Each piece is cast on with a stretchy German Twisted (Old Norwegian) long tail cast on and finished in a matching easy Sewn Bind Off. After blocking the six pieces are edged and joined with a decorative Flat Braid Crochet.
