As knitters, we spend a lot of time using our hands. I wanted to honor this precious time spent doing my favorite activity by designing a pair of mitts to wear while knitting in cooler temperatures. My Good Vibes Mitts are fingerless mitts that keep your hands warm and cozy while still allowing unrestricted movement of all fingers and the thumb. They are deceptively easy to knit up, using a striped slip-stitch pattern, and are suitable for any skill level. Striping the wool with mohair allows the mitts to be almost weightless when worn. I purposefully designed them without a thumb gusset because I did not want any bulk around the thumb; instead I knit them flat with an opening for the thumb along the seam, similar to some popular athletic-style clothing. The absence of a thumb also allows you to wear them lower on the hand—just covering the wrist and arm if you choose—which makes them more versatile. The slip-stitch pattern reminded me of sound waves in music (which I almost always listen to while knitting), and the deep berry colors mixed with shades of grey evoked thoughts of enjoying a robust glass of wine outside on a cool, cloudy day. Taken together, these design elements created some pretty “good vibes” that were truly inspiring.
