Goodnight Star
Crocheting and quilting naturally share a scrappy, no-waste sensibility and a general construction method of easy-to-work smaller segments that are then joined into a larger cohesive whole. This baby blanket reinterprets the familiar granny square into a versatile quilt block, using an unusual construction method to achieve a block with strong diagonals (also known as Half Square Triangles, or HSTs, in quilters’ parlance). This particular configuration of HST blocks is called a Sawtooth Star, but many other layouts are possible (see alternative configurations at the end of the pattern). After the internal blocks are seamed, a finishing striped border is crocheted around the outer edge to smooth the seam joins. A single Sawtooth block is the perfect size for a baby blanket (that doubles as a shawl!). If a larger blanket is desired, multiple stars may be made and seamed together before adding the finishing border.
