Gooseberry Socks
About this design
‘Gooseberry’ socks are covered with simple twisted-rib-based intertwining cables. These oval shapes with a stripe in the middle remind me of gooseberries (hence the pattern name) – the taste of
my childhood summers, when these berries seemed absolutely huge!
The socks are knit from the cuff down, with print flowing seamlessly from the cuff all around the leg and then further onto top of the foot.
This pattern utilizes a variation of ‘Strong heel’ (worked with built-in increases, no actual gusset) in 1x1 twisted rib that gets incorporated into the print.
The toe is worked in twisted rib with an anatomic fit, following the curve of the foot much better than the classic toe.

Sizes: pattern includes three sizes (most common teen/adult female shoe sizes) S (M, L) for shoes sizes EUR 36-42 / US 6-10
Yarn: any classic sock yarn (fingering weight ~400-420m/435-460yds per 100g/3.5oz)
You will need a total of ~65 (70, 80) g/2.3 (2.5, 2.8) oz for a pair.
I would recommend using solid, heathered, tonal or slow gradient yarns (heavily variegated or speckled yarns will ‘muddy’ the print).
As for content, twisted rib is rather harsh on the hands, so I would balance it off with an extra soft and luxurious yarn with a bit of cashmere or alpaca (but not too fuzzy).
Needles:I’ve knit all my samples using 5 wooden Lykke DPNs in size 2.25mm/US 1. Make sure to swatch with different size needles until you get gauge!
You can use any preferred method: magic loop, three needles, or short circulars (instructions indicate the different actions you might need to take for all these needle types).
Notions: stitch markers, tapestry needle, scissors
Gauge: 36 stitches х 43 rows in 10х10cm/4x4” in print after wet-blocking, slightly stretched.
Please note: twisted rib makes the fabric much denser and less elastic than regular rib.
