Aran cable knitting originated off the west coast of Ireland within the boundaries of its namesake home, the Aran Islands – a neat group of Gaeltacht isles nestled in the cold, restless waters of the Atlantic; their history long, rich and holding tight to an Irish-speaking status to this day. It is here that the ‘Aran Jumper’ hails from, this notable knitwear incorporating the very techniques created in inspiration from the surrounding environment.
This baby’s vest is named Grá Agus Gean - love and affection in Irish. Aran knitting in Ireland has always been something that has been made by skilled craftspeople for the people they love, with grá agus gean. Stories of Aran knitwear told by many around Ireland recounting their past, is how maternal family figures knit these items for their children and grandchildren - typically with wool that may have been scratchy which is an older version of the much softer Irish wool of this day.
While the Galway Wool Yarn from Donegal Yarns is the primary fibre choice, if the maker wishes to substitute the yarn, the designer recommends using the Soft Donegal (100% Merino Wool) by Donegal Yarns or any other DK weight if the maker wishes to change fibre completely.
