This (overlay mosaic crochet) pattern is for all of us who are grieving a big loss, or for those of us who want to crochet this blanket for someone who is grieving a great loss.

In this world and time it is all too easy to make no time nor space for processing the enormous losses we go through, so I hope you will find crocheting this blanket a great way to give yourself lots of grace and space to grieve.

My mother passed away in August 2024 and her passing hit me much harder than I had expected. My amazing friend and tester Jill Hamilton wrote to me: “I hope you’re giving yourself lots of grace and space to grieve”. Those words were so perfect! I found myself repeating ‘grace and space to grieve’ like a mantra on my morning walks. It was on one of these morning walks that I thought: I have to write those words on a blanket and crochet that blanket to indeed give myself lots of grace and space to grieve.

The blanket is crochet in the overlay mosaic crochet technique, working one color per row. Even the words you see are made using overlay mosaic crochet, using slanted stitches.

I hope crocheting this blanket will be a way for you to honor the loss you had, to sit with it, to be able to feel the grieve and translate it into something beautiful and meaningful.

The finished blanket, including the double border, measures 140 x 190 centimeters/55 inches x 75 inches.

Yarn stats


I’m giving you the yarn stats for Stylecraft Special DK, because that is what I used. You can of course use different yarn, but the amounts needed and size of your blanket may be different. 


Amount needed for the total blanket with the double border 1.935 grams/68.3 ounces; specifically, 1.276 grams/45 ounces of color A and 659 grams/23.3 ounces of color B.


For the main body of the blanket, you will need a 4,5 mm hook (UK 7 hook). You will also need a hook one size smaller than that for the border.

My blanket


I used Stylecraft Special DK for my blanket. I used Plum for my color A and Pistachio for my color B.
