This will be a great first project. A simple ribbed beanie is perfect for cancer patients, NICU, and other charitable donations. Feel free to check out this website to find the awareness-ribbon color you wish to support.
Notes:
This pattern is worked flat and seamed together. The crown decreases rapidly which may cause it to look gathered at the top. Beginning chain 1 is not counted as a stitch throughout the pattern. I crochet tight. So if you crochet loose, you will have to go down a hook size or two and check your gauge. See the diagram below for the gently stretched rectangle measurements. It should easily stretch 2-4 inches in width.
