Grand Teddy Bear
Meet our Grand Teddy Bear. He’s cute, cuddly and very, very big. This pattern supplies directions for making our Grand Teddy Bear. This teddy bear can be knit all in one colour of yarn, but the pattern also offers alternate directions for knitting contrasting coloured paws on the arms and legs.
This Grand Teddy Bear is suitable for advanced beginner knitters and assumes an understanding of basic stitches and standard knitting terms. It is knit flat and sewn together using a mattress stitch.
If you’re new to knitting stuffed friends, or are uncomfortable winging it without strict guidelines (that’s OK, we all need good directions sometimes to help us out) you will need approximately 435 m of medium weight yarn (95 m of an alternate colour, if you’re going to knit the alternate coloured paws and ears) and 3.5 m of medium weight black (B) yarn for the eyes and nose. With this yarn, use 4.5 mm (US size 7) needles. You will also need stuffing, (we use ecofil or wool) and a sewing needle to sew your teddy bear together. This will let you create a Grand Teddy Bear that’s approximately 50 cm (19.5 inches) in length.
The beauty of knitting stuffed friends is that this pattern can be knit in any size yarn with accompanying needles. Generally we find using a size or two smaller needles than required by the yarn allows for the tightness needed when you’re stuffing your finished product.
