The Grandiflora Hat features intertwining cables and delicate details that culminate in a pretty crown. It knits up and drapes beautifully in Stroopwafel DK, a luscious BFL/silk blend from KimDyesYarn. Grandiflora is intended to fit with a snug brim and gentle slouch in the body, giving comfort and warmth. Pair it with the Grandiflora Mitts for a matching set!
This pattern contains both fully charted and written instructions.
Recommended Yarn:
KimDyesYarn Stroopwafel DK — 55% Bluefaced Leicester / 45% silk — 231 yds (211 m) to 100 g per skein. Shown in Size L in colorway Rose. Yardage estimates include a 10% cushion for gauge differences.
Yardage per size —
S/M: 160 yds (146 m)
L: 175 yds (160 m)
Sizing (unstretched):
Size S/M — 13.5” (34 cm) around brim and 16.5” (42 cm) around body, 9” (23 cm) high, to fit head sizes 20-22” (51-56 cm). Slouchiness will be more pronounced in this smaller size.
Size L — 15.5” (39 cm) around brim and 18.5” (47 cm) around body, 9” (23 cm) high, to fit head sizes 23” (58 cm) and up.
Blocked Gauge:
29 sts and 36 rounds over 4” in Twisted Rib Brim pattern on smaller needle / 28 sts and 31 rounds over 4” (10 cm) in Main Body Pattern on larger needle, both worked in the round.
PLEASE NOTE: Changes in gauge will affect finished size, look of motifs, and amount of yarn used. To meet these dimensions and to ensure enough yarn, be sure to use needle size that gives gauge. The high silk content of Stroopwafel DK contributes to the blocking and drape of the hat — yarns with a higher wool content will not relax as much.
Needles:
US 3 (3.25 mm) and US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles in 16” (40 mm) length, with a set of five US 5 (3.75 mm) DPNs for crown.
Sample hat was worked with a US 4 (3.5 mm) needle for brim and US 6 (4 mm) needle for hat body, but as I tend to knit fairly tightly, I’ve listed needles one size smaller.
Other Materials:
4 stitch markers (1 distinct to mark beginning of round), cable needle in appropriate size, highlighter tape or other method of tracking chart (if needed), tapestry needle.
