Both decorative and useful, these hot pads work up fast when you use bulky yarn. I made mine in a cool, winter blue but I think these would look gorgeous on the dinner table, ready to serve your holiday feast on.
I love the granny hexagons that everyone was making a while back that use puff stitches but I found puff stitches were really tricky for me when I was a beginner crocheter - my hook always seemed to snag on the inside of the puff stitch before I could pull it all the way through. Which is why I designed this granny hexagon hot pad using a 3 double crochet cluster stitch instead.
To complete this pattern you need to know how to chain, slip stitch and use a double crochet to make a 3 double crochet cluster (3dcCL). The 3dcCL is essentially the same as a dc3tog but all your stitches are placed in the same space. The stitch is described step by step in the written pattern.
You will also need need the following materials:
Bulky weight yarn - the perfect yarn for this project is Bernat Maker Home Dec.
6.0mm crochet hook
Yarn needle
I like Bernat Maker Home Dec for this project as it’s mostly cotton but there’s just enough nylon in the yarn to give it some elasticity and to allow for a light steam blocking.
