When I started designing this hat, I wanted something simple that would leave the main role to this lovely yarn.
Something basic and earthy connected to the softness to this lamb wool. What would be more basic and earthy than wheat?
Grano, the wheat in Italian. The Italian kitchen is nothing without wheat. Just think about the pasta, pizza and white bread. The basics of everyday life here in Italy.

The hat is knit from the bottom up. The brim length is fully adjustable to your preference and the amount of yarn available. Simple lace that reminds me of the wheat grain ready to be harvested, decorates the body of the hat and the decreases are integrated to the pattern. The hat is intended to be slouchy with a relaxed fit.

Finished measurements

Brim circumference 33 (40, 43) 48 cm / 13 (15.75, 17) 19”

The hat is intended to be worn with 3-10 cm / 1.25 – 4” negative ease at the brim.

Yarn requirements
Idan Kehraamo Helmiainen fingering (100% Finnish wool, 202 m /50 g)
2 (2, 2) 3 skeins or 307 (358, 403) 447 m / 336 (391, 440) 489 yds of fingering weight yarn.

Please note that any changes made to the hat length will affect the amount of yarn needed.
I suggest using a woolly, fluffy, a bit of rustic yarn due to the gauge used in the pattern. Smooth, round yarn like 100 % Merino wool might give a very light fabric with rather big holes thus less warmth.

Gauge
23 sts x 35 rnds = 10 cm /4” with 4 mm (US 6) needles in lace pattern after blocking.
29 sts x 40 rnds = 10 cm / 4” with 3 mm (US 2.5) needles in ribbing after blocking.

Needles
4 mm (US 6) and 3 mm (US 2.5) circular needles or DPNs, or as required to obtain gauge.

Notions
1 st marker, tapestry needle. Optional: 6 (7, 8) 9 stitch markers for lace repeats.

The pattern is both charted and written.
The pattern has been professionally tech edited and it has been test knit.

A few comments from my testers:
“The Grano hat pattern is very well written and includes charts/instructions that are easy to follow and memorize. Perfect project for leftover yarn and for a relaxing knit. Love the fact that you added a bit of explanation about the inspiration for this pattern and informative notes about grano. It is a nice touch :)” -Mary

“I really appreciate the effort that you obviously put into this pattern. It shows. Your hard work in producing a clean, clear, easy-to-follow pattern made my job as a knitter easy. The text was also clear and concise, which meant that I didn’t have to waste a lot of time trying to figure out what I was supposed to do.” - Peri
