About the Pattern

When my friend in Kansas asked me to design this sweater with a funnel collar, I knew I’d need to make it a versatile pattern - one that she could knit for bitter, wet mid-western winters and one I could wear in the dry chill of Arizona.

I decided to knit my Arizona sweater using a fingering weight yarn with a halo of linen fibers to somewhat mask the loose gauge (Linen Quill by Purl Soho in Salt & Pepper). My friend in Kansas can knit her sweater at the same gauge using a sport weight wool and achieve a cozier sweater with a sturdier fabric.

For my sweater (pictured) I lined the collar with mohair to give it enough structure to stand up around my neck. If you use sport weight wool, you may not need to do this. Instructions are in the pattern notes for how to omit the collar lining.

You may have noticed in the photos that sometimes Gravel is bloused and sometimes it hangs to nearly tunic length. This is the happy result of a second drawstring encased in the bottom hem. It is pure function and may be my favorite element of Gravel (it’s rival is the false seaming that showcases the raglan shaping). I designed this sweater with a knee-length v-neck peacoat in mind and liked the idea of being able to ward off updrafts by cinching the bottom closed.

I hope you enjoy this simple, versatile sweater as much as I do!
