The design relies on the beauty of four matching colors to create a gradient, from lightest to darkest color. Trust your favorite hand-dyer to create the perfect combination for you!

The main idea behind it: gravity will always make the darker, ‘heavier’ colors go down – which defines not only the main color sequence, but also the rules for the ‘contrast colors’ during transition.

It is a truly simple pattern – for a project which will be the ideal companion to take to family gatherings or knitting meetings, or to be worked on during the daily commuting. You start at the top of the big rectangle with the lightest color C1, all in Stockinette with Seed Stitch borders. After about 15cm, you work a few transition rows in a combination of Broken Rib/ Broken Seed stitch, including all 4 colors, then change to color C2, and so on.

You will need 4 x 100g = 4 x 400m of light fingering yarn, to be knitted up at a gauge of 25 stitches x 36 rows, which will result in a size of approximately 65 x 190cm. But you could use any yarn weight and gauge, optionally applying a re-calculation of stitches and rows to reach your desired measurements.

My recommendation is to try out the new plant-dyed colors by Das Regenbogenschaf (e.g. Merino Baby, Pinta or Forest – or Alpaca Lace with 2 threads held together) to create the most beautiful gradient you can imagine.
