Greek Column Socks
These socks were originally designed for my dad. They are inspired by our Greek ancestry on my dad’s side of the family. The design on the leg is inspired by ancient Greek columns.
This pattern is written for using large circular needles using the magic loop method, but can be adapted. It is a simple construction with detailed colour charts. The charts are also designed to limit the amount of wide floats throughout the work. Only two colours are worked at a time, making it easy for first time colourwork knitting.
There is an added bit of interest on the foot with the colourwork band just before the toe!
This pattern has been tech edited and test knit!
Sizes:
Small (Medium, Large, X-Large)
7 (8, 9, 10)” foot circumference, measured around the ball of the foot. Select a size from the finished measurements that will give you approximately 1- 1.5 inches of negative ease, that is a size that’s 1-1.5 inches smaller in circumference than your actual foot.
Difficulty Level:
Beginner / Advanced Beginner
Techniques used:
- Knit & Purl
- Cast-on & Bind-Off
- Increasing, decreasing
- Knitting with two colours of yarn at once
- Working in the round (instructions in magic loop using needle 1 and 2, but can be adapted using stitch markers to mark out the 2 needles)
- Working from charts
- Heel flap/heel turn
- Picking up stitches
- Top-down sock knitting
- Kitchener stitch
Yarn:
I recommend on average to have 50g MC and 10g of each CC.
Main colour: I used white/ natural yarn approximately 50g (252 yds) (possibly a bit more for XL or long feet)
Contrast colour 1: I used a dark blue approximately 4-6g (18 - 27 yds)
Contrast colour 2: I used a medium or dark grey - approximately 8-10g (35 - 44 yds)
Contrast colour 3: I used a lighter blue - approximately 4-6g (18-27 yds)
It took me about 75g total for a size large with 11” long feet.
For your CC make sure they will contrast very well with the MC, maybe take a black and white picture of your colours together to help with the decision.
Yarn I used:
Cascade ReFine 100g/503 yds, 75% Superwash Merino Wool, 20% Nylon, 5% Viscose (100% recycled materials)(Fingering)
MC: Ecru 06; 0.5 skein
Katia United Socks 25g/109 yds, 75% wool, 25% Polyamide (Fingering)
CC1: Dark Blue 11 ; 0.25 skein
CC2: Dark Grey 09; 0.4 skein
CC3: Jeans 12 ; 0.25 skein
Needles
US 1 - 2.25 mm large circular
For the colourwork sections in the leg, I recommend a larger needle size, you can go up 1 to 2 sizes from the needles you used in your cuff to make sure your foot will fit through the leg of the sock! Try on as you go if you can!
I used US 1.5, but tighter knitters might prefer US 2 or bigger
Notions:
- Stitch markers
- Yarn needle
