One of my favorite birds to spot while birding is the Green Heron. I like to think that Green Herons are always cold (something I can relate to) because their thick necks are often drawn up in their body. Many people do not even realize that Green Heron’s have pretty long necks because they rarely see them stretched out. I designed this neck gaiter/cowl to celebrate the Green Herons and their necks. The neck gaiter/cowl will keep your neck warm or can be stretch out to help protect your face when venturing outside during the winter.

This circular cowl or neck gaiter is constructed in the round by dropping stitches which are then crocheted up 6 strands at a time to create large knitted stitches. The cowl starts and ends with a 2x2 ribbing. Additionally, the top of the cowl can be secured with a drawstring. This can help keep the cowl snug against the neck or help secure it up around the face in the harsh cold of winter. The drawstring is made by knitting an I-cord, but can be replaced with any cording, paracord, crocheted chain, ribbon, etc.

NOTE: Drawstrings are NOT recommended for children since drawstrings can be a choking or strangulation hazard.

There are instructions for the cowl that include ribbing with and without drawstring holes.

Additionally, the drawstring can be made so that it ties or is cinched using a cord stop that has two holes.
