Here are a couple of tips on my pattern:

1) When crocheting the center, try crocheting it as if you were crocheting a motif on a project.
It should make it easier.

2) Sewing the Spikes together, when you are sewing the spikes together, sew only seven stitches together.
I found it looked quite weird when I sewed to many stitches together because it looked bunched and awkward.
So try to sew only seven or six, but no less either because it will make it hard on you when you are crocheting the center of the star.
