The Greenlander Shawl draws its inspiration from the Saga of the Greenlanders, an Icelandic narrative that chronicles the epic tale of Greenland’s settlement and the Norse colonization of North America.

This shawl is designed using a simple old Scandinavian shawl shape and utilizes Mosaic stitch (where one works with one colour at a time) to make the Scandinavian motifs easy to work! Simple lace and an easy to work shape with kbf increases on each edge means you’ll be able to join the Vikings on their trip to Greenland!

Much like the saga’s unfolding story, this shawl takes us on a journey, beginning with the dark Norwegian fjords mirroring the starlit skies. From there, it ventures into the voyages of Eric and his intrepid followers, who on their journey find themselves lost amidst mists and tumultuous waves, but ultimately find safe harbor in Greenland. Here, they establish their homes, constructing longhouses, tilling the soil, tending to their farm animals, and hunting walrus. However, as the climate grows colder and drier, the settlers eventually leave. Some previously set their course for Vinland, while others return to their homelands in Iceland and Norway, where they sail the vast expanse of deep water and the timeless starlit nights.

This shawl’s design is based on a traditional Scandinavian shape, and the yarn chosen for it holds a rich heritage, mirroring the warmth it provided to the brave Vikings of yore. As you wrap yourself in this shawl, you’ll find comfort and a connection to the sagas, just as it once comforted those adventurous souls who dared to explore the unknown.
