The western tip of Greenwich, a peninsula that separates St. Peters Bay from the Gulf of St. Lawrence, became part of Prince Edward Island National Park in 1998 to protect and preserve the natural and cultural resources found in the area. Among the most spectacular natural characteristics to be protected at Greenwich are the unusually large and mobile parabolic dunes with their associated counter ridges, or Gegenwälle.

The Greenwhich Dunes Wrap is an adjustable shawl pattern, with specific instructions included for the basic 400y shawlette. The pattern includes additional instructions to add beads to the bottom edge of the piece, to increase the yardage of the piece, or to adjust its profile from a shallow crescent to a deeper crescent or triangular shape according to the knitter’s desire. The pattern is as changeable as the parabolic dunes that are its namesake.

Materials Needed:

• at least 400y fingering weight yarn; both yarns recommended are single spun merino
• 4mm (US 6) needles, or size needles to meet gauge
• at least 2 stitch markers recommended, placement shown in the pattern

Optional Materials:

• optional beads; 166 were used in the pattern as written, more will be needed if adjusting for a larger size (6 per point)
• fine crochet hook for stringing beads onto the yarn or placing onto stitches

Gauge: 26 sts by 34 rows in unblocked stocking stitch

Note that I do not generally consider gauge to be important for knitting shawls, so long as you achieve a fabric you like. If, however, you are making the minimum yardage size as specified in the pattern and your gauge is significantly larger, you may need more yarn.
