Shipbreaking is not limited to developing nations; Fornaes shipbreaking is located in Grenaa, Denmark. Here, and in other shipbreaking yards in Europe, ships are recycled in a safe, environmentally sound manner.

I designed this brightly colored pullover, with symmetrical ladders of dropped stitches, in honor of this approach to labor and industry.

Grenaa is worked in the round from the bottom up in one piece. The sleeves are worked in the round to the underarms and are joined to the body at the yoke. The yoke pattern is worked by dropping and unraveling stitches; no lace here!

This pullover can be worn with positive ease (the photos show the 36-inch bust size worn by a model with a 32-inch bust), no ease, or negative ease for a more curve-hugging fit. Unless you want a relaxed fit, I recommend making the size closest to your actual bust size.

I’d never before seen a colorway like Cephalopod’s Madrid, which I dubbed “Rusty Purple.” I knew it had to be a container ship design.
