Grey Ghost
Grey Ghost is an everyday-sweatshirt kind of knit. Assuming your everyday sweatshirts are knit in gorgeous woolen-spun cormo and feature lace and garter rib details, that is! But what I mean is that you will reach for this one ALL the time.
It’s worked seamlessly from the bottom up, with a raglan yoke. I modified the shaping to create a yoke that falls somewhere between Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Classic Raglan and her Hurry Up Last Minute Sweater (which many of you will recognize as a Carbeth) and I really like the cozy feeling and the more flattering lines of this little tweak!
As always, it’s the small, but intentional details that made this so much fun to design - and that make it fun to knit too.
The yoke shaping ends perfectly in line with the pattern columns on the body, and the garter rib motif around the sides and back of the sweater is a play on the lace at front. Special “side seams” add a space to modify the body and blend into the garter rib, plus the little ridge on each sleeve cuff echos the patterns once more. Lastly, a folded collar adds extra coziness to the neckline. As always, there are notes about altering this for fit in the pattern, and how to do so easily.
The Elsawool Sport 2ply is a woolen spun cormo, so it’s soft and round, with the subtlest hint of a heather in the fiber. It feels so amazing against your skin that I’m wearing the sweater with only a tank underneath in the photos. Plus, at $22 per 350 yds, it’s priced very reasonably for such an incredible farm yarn.

See below for more details about size and yarn quantity, and be sure to read the notes regarding each.
Sizes:
34.75(38,40.5,43.5,46.75,50)(54,59.5,62.75,66)” 88.25(96.5,103,110.5,118.75,127)(137.25,151.25,159.5,167.5)cm.
Sizes reflect circumference around sweater body, based on final blocked fabric. Choose the size that allows approx. 4-5”/10-12.75cm positive ease at bust for fit shown. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller one and add width as noted in pattern. I do not suggest adding extra ease, as this upper sleeve/yoke construction works best as recommended.
Yardage Per Size:
1200(1250,1300,1400,1450,1550)(1700,1750,1800,1850)yd
1100(1145,1190,1280,1325,1415)(1555,1600,1645,1690)m
Sample shown knit in 10% light grey.
If substituting yarn, note that this woolen-spun sport weight yarn has a nice loft to it, and knits to a larger gauge beautifully. Many worsted-spun sport weight yarns might not do so. SWATCH if unsure.
Also if substituting, yarn should knit to gauge without too much drape/weight. I recommend another lightweight, woolen-spun fiber with a lofty hand such as the cormo.
8/25: a new version was uploaded to Rav and an email was sent to buyers. A typo on page 5, Round 5 of written instructions was fixed. The original file had two extra “k2”s in the line. Mistake was in written instructions only, the chart was fine.
1/19/22: On page 8, Short Row 3A is missing one “10” in the first set of parentheses.
