Quick to make, this hat is great for gifts and charity projects, Make an adult or child-size hat in one color or add a contrasting stripe.

Adult hat uses about 2.5 to 3 ounces (71 to 85 grams) of worsted weight yarn.

The hat in the top photo was made with some old Red Heart Soft in the color Country Blue. The 2nd hat is from Red Heart Super Saver, color Carrot, with a stripe of Ocean Blue Caron One Pound.

The 3rd hat shown was made with an unidentified variegated yarn in shades of wine, pink and rose. The variegated yarn created both pools of color and stripes.

Tips & Hints:

Use Stitch Markers

Try putting a marker in the first and last stitch of the instructions in brackets (i.e., ) on the odd numbered rows. This will help you keep track of the repeats. You can use bobby pins or short pieces of a different color yarn for stitch markers.

On the even numbered rows, the first and last stitches in the brackets should be made in the stitches with markers. Remove the markers as you come to them if they are in the way.

Check your Stitch Count

If you have too many stitches, you are probably making extra increases (i.e., 2 stitches worked in the same stitch of the previous round) or you are making a stitch in the slip stitches.

If you have too few stitches, you may be skipping increases or using too many stitches in a single repeat of the the pattern. In this pattern, a repeat is denoted by instructions between the square brackets ().

The top of the last single crochet may hide a bit, so make sure you don’t skip it.

Miscellaneous

After Round 4, be sure to read carefully. The instructions are longer and less repetitive than the 1st 4 rounds. (Due to fewer increases so the top of the hat is rounded, not flat.)

Use a sticky note (e.g., Post It note) to mark your spot in the pattern.
