Griflet
Introduction
A cozy earflap hat designed to be non-constricting about the ears and forehead, snugging in at the lower brim to create a cocoon for the head and ears, providing maximal warmth with minimal itch. Named for one of King Arthur’s lesser known knights, Griflet has an aura of great deeds and adventure.
Difficulty
Intermediate or adventurous beginner
Special Skills
Knitting in the round, cable cast on, small bobbles, picking up stitches evenly along a knitted edge.
Yarn
Approx. 190-220 yds (170-200 m) of worsted to light aran weight wool. Shown in Impulse of Delight yarns: Merino Whisper (colourway Alpenglow Extreme), and Merely Worsted (colourways Blueberry Skies and Beary Surprise.) NB: the yardage estimates are generous - both I and a test-knitter made the largest size out of a single 190 yd skein of Merely Worsted, but there was very little left over.
Needles
4 mm (US size 6) or size to achieve gauge. The hat is best begun on a 16 inch (40 cm) circular needle. Once the flaps and brim are joined and the crown decreases started, you may choose 4 or 5 dpns, magic loop, or 2 circulars to continue. You will also need a 24 in (60 cm) circular needle to knit the lower brim (You could use the 16 in, but it will be a little awkward.)
