Gros Morne Cloak
Soaring fjords and moody mountains tower above a diverse panorama of beaches and bogs, forests and barren cliffs. Shaped by colliding continents and grinding glaciers, Gros Morne’s ancient landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wander coastal pathways and beachcomb among sea stacks. Cruise the dramatic, sheer-walled gorge of Western Brook Pond. Spot moose and caribou. Hike to alpine highlands where Arctic hare and ptarmigan thrive on tundra, and explore the colourful culture of nearby seaside communities.
The Gros Morne cloak is worked seamlessly from the collar down, using shaping at the shoulder that is similar to a Faroese shawl but extended so that the front edges meet. The half hitch cables of the front and back panels and the running cables along the bottom border add interest and a slightly Nordic feel; a nod to the Viking ruins on the other side of island from Gros Morne itself. The cloak is easily held closed using a shawl pin at the throat, or permanent fastenings may be sewn onto the collar. If fastenings are sewn on, I recommend also sewing in a fabric backing to prevent the collar from stretching over time.
