Grouse Dance Beret & Mitts
The spiral is a cross-cultural and timeless symbol that, for many, represents the cyclical nature of life, death, and rebirth. Spirals occur abundantly in nature. Human crafted spirals can be found as a perpetual motif from ancient through to modern times. One experiential interpretation of the sacred spiral is the Grouse Dance.
As we rush about our busy lives, we are reminded to look within and to nourish our inner selves so that we may follow our true paths. This beret pays homage to the spiral. Half brioche stitch panels are divided by braided cables which culminate in an intricate spiral dance at the crown.
Choose the edge style you prefer for the beret, classic ribbing, or woven cables.
The grey-blue ribbed edge set was made with Rowan’s Tapestry, shade no. 175, Moorland.
Two balls (100g, 240 metres) are requird for the hat alone, 1 ball for the gloves, or 2 balls for the set in size small - larger sizes may require more yarn!
The tweedy brown set with the woven cable band was made with Jamieson’s of Scotland DK in the shade called Grouse, 75 g (225 m) for the hat, 50 g (150m) for the gloves or 100g (300 m) for the set!
Rowan Tapestry is now discontinued, but another good quality Double Knitting (DK) weight yarn that knits to gauge can be used for either version of this hat and glove set.
The hat is written as one size for ladies small to large.
The gloves have a great deal of forgiveness, and are accordingly written one size. I wear a ladies small, but my husband (men’s medium) has borrowed these for the office!
Update, November 2012!
The gloves are now available in sizes small, medium, and large to fit hands 6.5, 7.5 and 8.5 inches in circumference.
The matching gloves feature the braided cables and rick rack lace while smooth stitches caress the palms. Less complicated than it looks, this is a lovely set for yourself, or for someone special.
The pattern is written out line by line, but charts are provided for the cables used in the body of the work, but not for the spiral finish.
A Fabulous gift set, requiring only 2 balls of gorgeous dkyarn.
So come, join the dance of life… and remember, always dance, and knit, with joy!
