Guánica Cowl
FREE: Price will update when you add to cart
To celebrate the pattern release, I am offering for free until October 23, 2020.
Guánica (Spanish pronunciation: ɡwanika) is a small town on the southwest coast of Puerto Rico. It has beautiful beaches, mangrove trees, access to an actual Gilligan’s Island, and an old abandoned lighthouse; and it’s just a short ride outside of Puerto Rico’s Jewel of the South, Ponce.
The Guanica Cowl brings the waves, sand, and the seaweed of Guanica, PR home. The design is meant to invoke the calm of the sea. The cable border is reminiscent of waves and starts your adventure with this shawl. Then you pick up stitches to continue to the sand. The sand is created using a seed stitch. Then the seaweed grows from the sand using a lace pattern. The cowl is completed with a bit more sand and the waves.
The elements included are accessible to knitters of all levels. If you need learn any of them or just need to brush up, there are links to tutorials at the end of the pattern.
CONSTRUCTION
The Guanica Cowl is knit in the round starting with the construction of the first cable edging, then moving to the seed stitch. The bulk of the cowl is constructed using a lace pattern. It is then completed with rounds of seed stitch and the addition of the second cable edging. This pattern is broken into sections for ease of construction.
SKILLS NEEDED
Provisional cast on, Kitchener stitch, picking up stitches, and attached cable edge. Visit the Tutorials section on CurlyGirlFibers.com for instructions and video tutorials.

YARN PREFERENCE
Any merino-based fingering-weight yarn is recommended. Once blocked, this type of yarn will best show the elements included in the design. The sample was made using 100 gram skeins of Round Mountain Fibers in Turquoise for the cables, and American Toad for the lace in their Alder Fingering base (80% Superwash Merino, 20% Nylon). I held both together for the seed stitch.
