Gulf Waves is a crescent-shaped shawlette inspired by the beautiful deep colors and textures found in the Gulf of Mexico, knit using a combination of garter stitch, one-color brioche, and eyelet stockinette. This one-skein shawl was inspired by the custom color way that Copper Corgi created for Fuzzy Goat, Westjack Kid. The colors look so much like the tropical sea of the Gulf of Mexico, which is the large body of water that separates South Texas and South Georgia, where we each live. I imagine myself waving to Cadence from the beach!! This pattern was originally designed exclusively for the Fuzzy Fix subscription boxes, in collaboration with the Fuzzy Goat yarn shop in Thomasville, GA!
Skill level: Beginner brioche friendly!! One-color brioche is such a great introduction to brioche knitting, and this pattern gives you breaks with a breezy eyelet stockinette! Techniques used: knitting, purling, yarn overs to create eyelets, brioche knit (brk), sideways crescent shawl shaping.
Construction Notes: This crescent-shaped shawlette is knit from side to side, beginning and ending with garter stitch. Very few stitches are cast on, and the shawl grows within the garter stitch with increases created along the right edge. Once the center section is reached the shawl is knit with no shaping, and textural waves are created within the fabric by alternating between One-Color Brioche and Eyelet stockinette stripes. After completing the stripes, garter stitch and shawl shaping resumes by decreasing stitches on the right edge, ending with few stitches. The crescent shape is created in the blocking process.
I love to wear this shawlette around my neck and shoulders on a breezy evening. It pairs perfectly with a strappy sundress for a fun date night, or with a light jacket for a night on the town.
One size: 68” / 173cm wingspan and 11” / 28cm depth, measured after blocking. Schematic included with pattern.
Yarn: 460 yds / 421 m Fingering / Sock weight yarn
Shown in:
1 skein Copper Corgi Savannah Sock in Westjack Kid: Exclusive color for The Fuzzy Goat (100% Superwash Merino wool; 460 yds / 421 m per 100g)
Yarn notes: The textures created in this pattern are perfect for showing off speckled and variegated yarns! Grab that special skein that’s been sitting in your stash or dash out to your LYS to get a brand new one! If you are using that perfect skein of yarn but the yardage is less than this pattern calls for, I recommend omitting ONE repeat of the stripes, but still ending with the last Brioche stripe.
Needles: 24” / 61cm or longer US 4 / 3.5mm circular needle, or size needed to obtain gauge. Circular needles are used for ease of knitting, this project is small enough that straight needles could be used.
Needle size note: If you are using a skein of yarn that is less than the yardage / meterage called for in this pattern, you may find it beneficial to go down a size or two. One of my test knitters had success with this.
Tools: tapestry needle, row counter, optional locking stitch marker for noting RS of work.
Gauge: 27 sts x 38 rows = 4” / 10cm; measured in garter stitch worked flat (taken after blocking).
Special thanks to Cadence with Fuzzy Goat for her endless support and friendship. She has created a wonderful community with her yarn shop, it is so inviting and she has curated so many beautiful yarns and tools for knitters of all levels. I also want to thank my amazing tech editor and friend, Meaghan Schmaltz notsorryknitter. Be sure to check out my test knitters’ awesome shawls!!
