A small shawl knit up in luxurious yarn and sized so that you can switch to the second skein for the border to minimize differences in skein color. The basket-weave garter body is bordered by a stockinette ruffle.
The best place we stayed on the trip was the Hillsview B&B in Gunners Cove. We enjoyed wonderful views of the cove from our window and the deck and fabulous breakfasts including toutons (fried homemade bread dough with molasses and butter); homemade bakeapple, partridgeberry, and blueberry jams; and berry pancakes, scones, bacon, eggs, and French toast made from bread baked right in the kitchen. We were just a few minutes away from L’Anse aux Meadows, Dark Tickle, and Noddy Bay. A short distance up the road we found a restaurant with good seafood and friendly people. One of the waitresses saw me knitting and brought out her nalbinding - a form of early knitting used by the Vikings. Newfoundland is the only place I’ve been (other than a fiber festival) where so many people showed interest in my knitting as knitters themselves.
Our Newfoundland trip inspired a collection of patterns - Northward.
