The Gunnhild scarf features a simple lace pattern that is delineated by twisted-stitch cables.

The scarf can be easily shortened, lengthened, and widened. Instructions for doing so are given in the pattern. The pattern is charted only.

While the sample was worked in a DK yarn, it would also look great in worsted.

Gunnhild is part of my series Along the Whale Road, which highlights yarns from places visited & settled by the Vikings. The sample scarf used yarn from North Ronaldsay sheep from the Orkney islands in Scotland. It’s not super-soft but has great stitch definition.

The “whale road” is a Norse kenning for the sea.

Gunnhild was one of the sisters of St Magnus of Orkney.
