A gyroscope (from Greek γῦρος gŷros, “round” and σκοπέω skopéō, “to look”) is a device used for measuring or maintaining orientation and angular velocity It is a spinning wheel or disc in which the axis of rotation (spin axis) is free to assume any orientation by itself. When rotating, the orientation of this axis is unaffected by tilting or rotation of the mounting, according to the conservation of angular momentum. Applications of the gyroscope are found in the Hubble Telescope, navigation systems (especially submarines), among others. The pattern elements suggest the axle/spin axis, the rotor, and the rotational freedom of each.

This intricately designed hat epitomizes the rotational freedom of the gyroscope, and allows the knitter to develop their skill as they work intricate cables and lace in an exciting format. Decreased to the crown with well-thought-out elements, the continuity of the pattern is maintained.
