Gytha is a simple lace scarf. Its main motif is a variation on the traditional horseshoe from Shetland/fishtail from Estonia offset with garter stitch. It is knitted in two parts and grafted at the center.

The scarf can be easily shortened, lengthened, and widened. Instructions for doing so are given in the pattern. The lace is charted only.

While the sample was worked in laceweight yarn, it would also look great in fingering weight.

Thanks to my testers laubatt, joyquilts, and adatta!

Gytha is part of my series Along the Whale Road, which highlights yarns from places visited & settled by the Vikings. The sample scarf used single-ply mohair yarn from Denmark.

The “whale road” is a Norse kenning for the sea.

Gytha Thorkelsdotter was the daughter of a Danish chieftain and mother of King Harold Godwinson.
