This pattern has not been tested.

The Habagat cowl is a very simple colourwork cowl made in collaboration with Jody Long Yarns. The Yarn used for this project is the Alba yarn which is a sport weight yarn with 50% Merino, 25% Alpaca and 25% Viscose. The colours used in the photo is named Magpie (gray) and Gorse (yellow). This is a lovely light-weight, tweedy yarn and it looks so well in colourwork.

The Cowl is written in 3 sizes: 26”/66cm (30”/76cm, 35”/89cm) but is easily modifiable by adding pattern repeats.

I decided to call this cowl Habagat after the Filipino name for the southwest monsoon since this was made during the Habagat Season. The southwest monsoon brings with it the heavy typhoons and rainfall in the middle of the year from June to September. The character Habagat may also be found in several Philippine folklore and is paired with the character Amihan who is the northeast winds, the more gentle of our seasons. It is said that they are siblings borne from the deity Bathala who allow them to take turns playing with the world, thus signaling the changing of the seasons. When Amihan plays with the world, there is the gentle, cool winds and clear skies perfect for the planting season. And when Habagat plays with the world, he brings with him the strong and angry winds, and the heavy rains.
