Half Hap
Rebecca Blair designed a Hap Shawl for Interweave Knits Holiday 2018 based on a garter-stitch bias-knitted square center and using commercial yarn. For this handspun version, Sara Greer used hand-prepared batts of fine Shetland wool from Whispering Pines in four natural colors. She converted the center square into a triangle, worked the bold three-color zigzagging border on the short sides, and added the pointed edging on all three sides.
Worked in DK weight, the commercial-yarn version is more like a light shawl than this warmer and quicker-to-knit handspun version. The versatility of the hap makes the same basic shape lovely in a range of weights, and the flexible design can be adapted to any size.
Fiber 24 oz natural gray Shetland batts and 2 oz each natural dark brown, light brown, and oatmeal Shetland batts from Whispering Pines.
Yarn 2-ply; 700 yd MC (gray), 50 yd each CC1 (dark brown), CC2 (light brown), and CC3 (oatmeal); 475 ypp; 8 wpi; bulky weight.
Needles Size 6 (4 mm): 36” circular. Adjust needle
size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
Notions Marker; stitch holder; tapestry needle; Tpins.
Gauge 14 sts and 30 rows = 4” in garter st.
Finished Size 71” wide and 37” tall.
Notes The main triangle of this shawl is worked flat. After it is completed, stitches are picked up along two edges and the lace border is worked. The shawl is completed with a narrow knitted-on pointed edging.
