Halloween party bats
Bats have always been part of our spooky Halloween aesthetics; but what if after all this time being dragged into human celebrations, they want to throw a party of their own? This pattern will guide you through making a regular bat, as well as 8 different creepy-cute costumed ones - let the party begin!
Size
About 8.5 cm (3 ¼”) tall to the tip of the ears with 11 cm (4 ¼”) wingspan if made from DK weight; 10 cm (4”) tall with 13 cm (5”) wingspan from worsted weight
Tools and materials (for the basic bats):
~ DK or worsted weight yarn in 2 colors, plus a short piece of black
~ 2.75mm/C hook if using DK weight yarn, 3.5mm/E for worsted (or size needed to obtain a tight, no-gaps fabric)
~ 6mm (for DK)/7mm (for worsted) black plastic eyes
~ fiberfill stuffing
~ stitch markers, pair of scissors, pins, yarn needle
Required yarn colors and other additional supplies for the costumed bats are listed in front of the individual patterns.
Difficulty
This pattern is suitable for intermediate level crocheters, who are confident with basic stitches (ch, sl st, sc, hdc, dc, tr) and frequently used amigurumi techniques (invisible decrease, magic loop, working in FLO/BLO).
Surface crochet is used on the wings, and some of the costume designs require embroidered details (the pattern contains short tutorials for these techniques).
The pattern is written in English using US crochet terminology (UK/Aus equivalents provided). It contains many in-progress photos to help you crochet your bats, but I also added a separate text-only pdf for easy printing, if you prefer working from a printed pattern but want to save ink and paper.
Finished amigurumi made from this pattern are yours to keep or gift or sell, I only ask you to credit me as the designer in case you decide to sell them.
