I have worked with Yarnart Begonia crochet cotton. You can use any yarn depending on the projects you wish to have. The applique size will depend on the yarn thickness and the hook size you choose.
I have also used a polystyrene sheet, head pins, and spray starch to flatten and make the shape of the tree branches.
