From the book:

The pattern of this boy’s sweater comes from a nineteenth century Swedish cap, and any person wearing it could be easily identified as coming from the province of Hälsingland, bordering onto the Gulf of Bothnia. The pattern is bold and distinctive, combining simple narrow stripes, bands of horizontal diamonds, and vertical panels of diamonds and V’s. Traditional colours were also distinctive and varied - mainly red with white diamonds and borders, plus stripes of brown, green, navy, and gold.

This sweater has all the features of the Hälsingland cap, including the colours and a faithful reproduction of the pattern. Its constant changes in colour and design make it a very interesting pattern to work.*
