Note to anyone who still wants to knit this before I’m finished rewriting: The recommended alpaca yarn was knit to a deliberately very small size to begin with, to achieve a glove with pronounced buttonholes that doesn’t sag. I then fully wet-blocked it, which caused it to grow. If you are substituting with wool or want a tighter glove with smaller buttonholes, knit to the actual size of your arm circumference - i.e., do not subtract 2” when calculating the number of stitches to knit.
