Hanging Monkeys Toy
This is an easy and fun pattern for a popular children’s toy. We include two sizes of monkey as well as guidance on adapting them for different colour schemes and textures.
The integrated legs mean less sewing up at the end, and the jointed arms allow the monkey to be posed in different ways. The hands can be fastened to each other or to another monkey. Why not knit several and make a long chain…?
Difficulty: Easy
Stitches used: kfb, k2tog, p2tog, p2togtbl (optional), sl1k1psso
You will need:
• Wool. I used Double Knit (8-6 ply, “light worsted”.) Tension square: 10cm x 10cm is 24 sts across and 32 rows. At this weight you should need at most 50g per monkey.
• Knitting needles – I used UK size 11 (3.0mm, US size 2.5)
• Blunt sewing needle for stitching with wool
• Toy safety-eyes, or small amount of wool to stitch eyes
• Stuffing
• Stitch-holder / spare needle
• Fastenings such as poppers (press studs, snap fasteners). If you buy these monkeys as plush toys, they usually have Velcro on their paws, but Velcro may snag your knitting.
