Description:
Hanging Moss Hat is a slouchy, overall textured hat. Knit up in a worsted weight superwash yarn, this squishy hat will keep you warm while also being a beautiful addition to your cold weather wardrobe. Hanging Moss Hat is a companion to the KISKIS Shawl, inspired by a character from Tolkien’s Middle Earth. Whether you’re a fan of Tolkien or not, I hope this hat brings you warmth and comfort.

Needle Size: US Size 5 needles (3.75mm) and US Size 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles; 20 in (50 cm) and 32 in (80 cm) cords for magic loop or size US 5 (3.75 mm) and US 7 (4.5 mm) dpns if you prefer

Gauge:
“Double Seed Stitch”: 17 sts x 32 rounds = 4 in (10 cm) x 4 in (10 cm) on Size US 7 (4.5 mm) after blocking

Amount of yarn needed:
For the hat: 1 skein of Knitten Word Baba Yaga Worsted OR 122 (144, 168, 181 yds / 111 (131, 153, 165) m OR 56 (66, 77, 83) g in a similar superwash BFL yarn. See “Notes” for more details on how to choose a good substitute. For an optional pom pom: 26 yds/24 m OR 12 g

Notions: Stitch markers, tapestry needle

Notes:

Yarn substitution - Any superwash yarn will work with this hat. I knit this hat out of a superwash BFL yarn. BFL, even in superwash, is a toothy fiber that clings to itself nicely. When blocked, the hat relaxed and became softer - though it still has structure. If you’d like a similar substitution, Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Worsted (superwash or nonsuperwash) would be a great option. Just be aware: if you choose to use a nonsuperwash wool, the hat may behave in a stiffer manner than the sample.

Modifications: Hanging Moss is an easily modifiable pattern. Designed with 4 in (10 cm) of slouch, you can either add in or subtract length by taking out vertical repeats of the “Double Seed Stitch.” If you met gauge, 1 in (2.5 cm) in length = 8 rounds. Similarly, if you’d like a smaller or larger circumference, you can add or subtract horizontal repeats. 1 in (2.5 cm) = about 4 stitches. Please note: adding length or circumference may result in needing more yarn.

Charts: I’ve included a chart for “Double Seed Stitch.” However, reading charts is not required to knit this pattern. All instructions are written out below.
