Hanging Ornaments
At its core, this pattern describes how to make a simple knit sphere, with the flare of stranded colorwork and personalization of a monogrammed letter. As these knit up quickly, they are great gifts to give to others!
These spheres are knit in the round from the ‘bottom’ up using either a set of 5 DPN’s or with the magic loop method. Charted and written details are given towards the end of the pattern for how each letter of the alphabet can be monogrammed into the pattern (the main pattern is written for the letter ‘A’ with
instructions given at the end of the pattern for other letters).
You can also omit the colorwork all together and make solid spheres. Or perhaps you can make the bottom half one color and the top half another. Or try horizontal stripes. The possibilities are endless!
The weight of yarn, size of needles, and gauge are not so important here. My only suggestion is to use smaller needles than the “suggested” for your weight of yarn. This keeps the balls knit a little tighter so the filling doesn’t show through the stitches.
Yarn: (2 colors)
Main color: 15 yards
Contrast color: 5 yards
Other Tools:
Stitch markers (to mark end of round)
Tapestry needle
‘Stuffing’ such as fiberfill or old yarn scarps
These instructions are written as if one is using DPN’s with sts on 4 needles. If using the magic loop method, you may consider using extra stitch markers in the exact middle of each side (after 3 sts from the cast on). These markers indicate the “end of needle” in the instructions.
Techniques Used:
Stranded colorwork
“Make 1” left and right
I hope you enjoy the pattern!
