I was spinning a lovely, long-stapled Shetland/Corriedale lamb fleece during Tour de Fleece and all I could think about while spinning was knitting a Hap style shawl. Once I’d finished and found out how much and what weight of yarn I had made I went searching for a pattern. I knew I wanted a garter stitch center and Old Shale for the border. All of the patterns I found had the center square knit on the diagonal. I’m not fond of diagonal knitting and really just wanted to knit a square with no increasing or decreasing.

I decided to design my own shawl. A simple garter stitch square. Old Shale for the border and a pretty unnamed lace edging that fit the stitch count.

This would also make a lovely baby blanket.

Yarn Requirements:
Any sport weight yarn. I used a handspun yarn that averaged sport weight.

450 yds Color A
100 yds Color B

Needle:
US Size 6 circular 47 inch and a pair of straights.

Measurements after blocking: 36 X 36 inches.

Techniques:
Provisional Cast on, knit, purl, yo, k2tog, p2tog, slip stitches, SKP (Slip one stitch knitwise, knit the next stitch, pass the slipped stitch over the stitch just knitted), and knitted on border.

Skill Level:
Adventurous beginner / intermediate. The knitted on border can be a bit fiddly to start if you’ve not done it before.
