Happiness Hat
This is a design inspired by Elsbeth Lavold’s Viking Patterns for Knitting. The symbol between the cables is the St John’s Cross, also called the happiness sign because it was supposed to bring happiness.
The cabling on the symbol is a little different in that you will be switching up knit and purl stitches instead of the “standard” knit-over-knit stitches in the usual cables. If you know cabling, it’s not a big deal. Just make sure to follow the instructions or chart on whether it’s a cable in front or in back. Also, it’s easy to remember on the symbol that the knit stitches are always in front of the purl stitches, so that should help keep things straight.
There are no set recommendations for yarn or needle size. The pattern has one set of instructions, but different sizes can be obtained by using different weight yarns and different size needles. There are two examples of sizes with different yarn weight/needle size combinations to give you a starting point.
Make sure to do a gauge swatch in your desired yarn to determine stitches per inch. Use that to calculate the approximate size based on the required number of stitches for the pattern and adjust needle size accordingly. It will be a bit stretchy, so an exact fit is not necessary.
