Happy Home Cable Knit Placemats
I was looking to make some placemats and after scouring patterns out there I just couldn’t find exactly what I wanted. They had to be knitted with a yarn that would hold up well to washing, be a pattern that was simple enough for me to remember without a chart in front of me but interesting enough to not get boring. And they had to look good! I hope you like these as much as I do…
Pattern Notes…
• The yarn will be held double throughout the project. I used a little less than 125 grams per placemat, so if you are making a bunch you can eek out an extra with your leftovers if you don’t mind weaving in a bunch of ends.
• During the cable chart you will be slipping the first stitch of every row purlwise, with yarn in front and knitting the last stitch of every row through the back loop. This will give you a nice edge. These stitches are marked on the chart.
• You will be blocking your placemat to 13 x 17 inches but the finished size is about an inch smaller in each direction because there is some spring back after you take it off the wires and/or pins.
• If you want to make your piece wider, you can do so by adding more seed stitch in the center section. To make it longer, all more repeats of the chart. To go smaller, do less repeats and/or seed stitch.
Supplies…
• You will need 3 balls of Elsbeth Lavold Hempathy per placemat, 153 yards/50 grams.
• US4 (3.5mm) Needle (or size to obtain gauge), in whatever style you prefer for knitting back and forth
Notions…
• Yarn needle for weaving in ends
• Cable needle
• 2 stitch markers
Gauge…
• Hempathy (held double): 4 stitches, 8 rows = 1 inch, with US4 (3.5mm) needles, in seed stitch after blocking
Size…
• Finished size is 12 inches high by 16 inches wide.

A Note About My Patterns: I encourage teaching from my patterns! Whether you are a local yarn store, knitting teacher, or an individual wanting to teach a group of girlfriends we welcome you to use our patterns as class projects. I only have two requirements. One, that a pattern is purchased for each student from us. And two, that credit is given to me as the designer of the pattern. Patterns may never be copied and distributed for any reason and objects made with my patterns may not be used for financial gain.
