Happy New Year (2019) is a toe-up sock featuring simple ribs and little cables using Bavarian travelling stitches on the instep. The ribs are repeated on the faux heel flap, and flow into little cables on the back of the leg. The ribs wind into a motif based on an old Austrian stitch pattern called “Brennende Liab”, which is “Burning Love” in English. Further up the top that motif is repeated around the leg, and the ribs and cables end in a simple cuff; use stretchy BO of your choice to finish the sock.

Samples were done using US size 0 (2mm), but use needle size that results in stitch gauge with your yarn and knitting style. The pattern is written for two circular needles, but can be knitted on magic loop or DPNs. Aim for a gauge of about 9 spi, and you will be fine. Row gauge is not that important because you will calculate when to start the gusset increases.

Sock pattern comes in 2 sizes, the equivalent of a plain 60-stitch sock and a plain 72-stitch sock. The foot has fewer stitches than the leg, and there is a column of ribbing on the sole to provide a snug fit.

Additional material: 1 darning needle, a few stitch markers, 1 ruler (because it measures more accurately than a tape measure).

Please take note of the fact that you will be working from charts.
